Regina
Girls Qualify
For State Championships!
The Regina Cross Country Team qualified for the state cross country
championships next week in Peoria by placing fourth at the Chicago (Jones)
sectional. It is only the second time in school history that the Regina cross
country team has qualified a team to state, the first time being in 1993. Regina
had strong performances and personal records from every member of the team to
qualify. The team was led by the dynamic duo of Amber Seo (Jr.) and Ellie
Heinrich (So.), recording personal best times of 19:36 and 19:42 to place 10th
and 11th, respectively, on the Niles (West) High School three mile course. Solid
performances by sisters Julie Campanaro (Sr.) (31st, 20:36) and Aileen Campanaro
(So.) (36th, 20:45), kept the team in contention for the state meet berth. The
difference between going to state and staying home came down to Regina's fifth
scorer, Brittany Metoyer (Sr.), who placed 44th with a time of 21:07. Metoyer's
time was nearly two and a half minutes faster than what she ran on the same
course at last year's sectional when she placed 120th in 23:34. Stephanie Park
(Jr.) also recorded a personal best time for Regina, running 22:56 to place 82nd
in only her second varsity race.
"This was truly a team effort by all the
individuals who stepped on the line today," said first year Regina coach
Dr. Mark
Thompson. "Every single individual put their whole heart into this race for the
team and for the school. Both myself and coach Greg Fedyski are extremely proud
and excited at the level in which they competed today and what they accomplished
for themselves and Regina. Competing and qualifying with their top runner and
lone returning state qualifier Jacqueline Ave Maria (Jr.) sidelined by an
injury, the adversity and odds that these girls overcame during the season to have the opportunity
to experience the state championship next week in Peoria is an experience they
will relish forever."
The 2008 IHSA Girls Class AA state
championship race will be held on Saturday, November 8, at Detweiller Park in
Peoria. Race time is 11:00 AM. The coaches and team members are very thankful
and grateful to everyone who came out to the meet in support of the Regina girls
quest to qualify for the state meet.

Girls Surprise
Visited By World Class Runner Eduardo Torres
The Regina Cross Country Team got a surprise visitor prior to Monday's workout
in preparation for their upcoming sectional championship race. Eduardo Torres, a
two-time USA World Cross Country Team member and former two-time Footlocker High
School All-American from Wheeling, Illinois, stopped by to congratulate the team
on their recent regional championship victory. Torres also spoke to the team
about what inspires him to run competitively and tips on peaking for races.
Since he was first discovered by Regina
coach Greg Fedyski fifteen years ago at Prospect Hts. MacArthur Middle School,
Torres did nothing but help lead his school teams to championships. Alongside
his twin brother, 2008 Beijing Olympian Jorge Torres, the twins led the MacArthur
team under Fedyski in 1993 to their school's first ever Illinois Elementary
School Association Boys' Cross Country state title. In high school, the twins
continued to train under Fedyski as members of the Prospect Hts. Running Club
and led Wheeling High School to their school's only Boys Cross Country state title in 1998.
And in 2001, they led the University of Colorado to their school's first ever
Men's Cross Country national championship. Eduardo is now racing the marathon and
recently finished 3rd place in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in
Minneapolis, Minnesota with a time of 2:17:58. The Regina girls and staff thank
Mr. Torres for his support and inspiration and wish him the best of success in
his running career.

to the school to congratulate the girls on winning their first regional cross
country title in 15 years. Mr. Torres also came out to the Sectional
championships to wish them good luck on the starting line.

World Class and former high
school All-American Cross Country runner Eduardo Torres speaks to members
of the Regina girls cross country team while his former middle school and high school
club coach Greg Fedyski looks on.
